Owen & Laura’s The Commons Wedding
Red Bloom Photography
I feel like a broken record talking about how amazing and chill my couples are but they really
are just so laid back! These two just made everything so easy, even with a limo driver that was
late and got lost..TWICE ha ha! These two opted for a private first look in Laura’s parents backyard.
Well I say private but everyone was watching through the windows. We did half of their photos before
the ceremony and then took advantage of their gorgeous venue for the rest of their photos. And it was look extra
amazing thanks to the talents of Kelsey from White Copper Weddings.
How did you guys meet ?
We both work at TransAlta and we met through mutual co-worker friends. We
were good friends for a year before we started dating. And we are both still with the company.
Please share the proposal story with us?
Owen and I went on a trip to Niagra-on-the-Lake and did a full
day of wine touring by bike. We then went to this amazing farm-to-table restaurant called the Backhouse,
it was a 14 course meal with wine pairing and it was fabulous. Owen told the server earlier in the meal he
was planning to propose and he waited until the 13 course which was an ice-wine float, the server came
out with the course and explained it, and when I looked back Owen had the ring out and was proposing.
One of the servers caught it all on Owen’s phone and recorded it. She was also as if not more excited
than I was
Most memorable moment from your wedding day?
Owen: The first look
Laura: as soon as I turned down the aisle and saw Owen standing there, I almost lost it haha.
Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?
The style of the ceremony was very much us, we are big foodies and having the different food stations
was key, also we really wanted a more non-traditional format where people weren’t stuck at their table for
hours. The ice sculpture was also very Owen, he loves to have a good time and it was something we
were really excited to show as a secret for all our guests. We used Owen’s parents wedding cake knife to
cut the cake, it was engraved with their names and their wedding date, which was really special.
Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you made for your
wedding? What made it so easy?
Choosing Urbane Culinary as our caterer was the easiest decision, after the tasting we were sold, they
were so accommodating and were happy to fufill any vision we had. They also provided the servers for
the bar and worked with us really well.
What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your wedding day? And advice to
couples on this?
Figuring out how much alcohol to purchase, we were in charge of buying it all and we had a really hard
time deciding quantities. Ultimately we got the advice of Wine and Beyond and still increased the quantity
by about 20% more than we thought we needed. Our advice would be to buy more than you think you
need and make sure you can return any unopened booze.
Advice to couples planning their wedding day?
Referrals from friends were the best option, they all turned out to be really good. And having someone
you know and trust recommend gave me piece of mind. Also the wedding day coordinator was worth her
weight in gold. Kelsey was amazing and we were so happy to have her.
And now some words from the newlyweds.
