Emerald Lake Lodge Wedding
Mark & Kait’s Intimate Mountain Wedding
Red Bloom Photography
My first wedding of 2019 and it was one extra beautiful day! A little stat for you all is that
February 2019 was the 3rd coldest February on record in over 125 years….but in saying that
the weather took a turn for the better for this day and we were lucky and had a nice breezy
-10c day in the midst of a month full of -20 to -30 days. Felt warm to me but I was also quite
bundled up. Mark & Kait had an intimate wedding at the gorgeous Emerald Lake Lodge. This was
my very first wedding of my own there but I have second shot quite a few for friends.
The property is so beautiful in winter and summer but this photographer is a big fan of
winter weddings and just how beautiful they are. This wedding day was a short one for me with
only five hours of work so it was just enough to cover Kait getting ready through to a few photos
at the cocktail hour. With everything so close we did not need much time for photos and only
spent about 45 minutes outside (with a few quick breaks for everyone as they were much
colder then I was). We walked across from Cilantros so a nice area of packed snow on the
frozen lake to get some beautiful shots there and then luckily people had created a nice path by the river and we
were able to get to it and shoot with the property in the background. I stepped off the path once and ended up
hip deep in snow. Luckily my husband was there with me working on his videography and he helped me
out of the snow! ha ha
Here are some words from Mark & Kait about how they met and their wedding day!
How did you guys meet ?
We met online in December 2013, we both knew on our first date that we had a connection.
When we met, I’d been living in Calgary for 6 months and still hadn’t been to the mountains!
When I told Mark that he said he’d like to take me sometime. And sure enough for our 2nd date he
planned a LOVELY day trip out to Lake Louise and Banff! We went on a sleigh ride at Lake Louise, a
soak in the hot springs and dinner at the Grizzly House in Banff!
Less than 2 months after that we took off on a trip to Thailand (flying standby,
to keep things interesting!) and the rest is history!
Please share the proposal story with us?
We both knew early on that we wanted to get married eventually. So Mark endured a
couple of years of not so subtle hints!
When we FINALLY popped the question, we were in Kelowna visiting his parents so it was really lovely
to be able to celebrate with them!
Most memorable moment from your wedding day?
Bride: I was really stressed out for the last 30 mins before the ceremony but as soon as I turned
the corner walking down the aisle and saw Mark, I felt instantly at ease. Until I realized he was not wearing
the agreed upon tie! Haha.
The ceremony was the part we were both least looking forward to and it
ended up being my favourite part of the day!! ️
Groom: Getting to kiss Kait at the end of the ceremony and walking down the
aisle together in front of all our friends and family. It was amazing to spend the weekend with
all of our favourite people.
Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?
Every time we drive out to the mountains and round that first corner that gives such
an amazing view, I’m reminded of the first time we made that drive together on our 2nd date.
That’s a big reason why we chose a winter wedding in the mountains!
We really wanted to keep the ceremony short and sweet and I think we were able
to accomplish that with our amazing officiant, Hans.
Something old: diamond studs Mark gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago.
Something new: my wedding dress, generously gifted to me by my parents.
Something borrowed: my sister Rebecca lent me her beautiful veil for the big day!
Something blue: the blue eryngium in my bouquet.
I also wore my Nanny’s mink jacket for some of the outdoor photos. She passed away
almost 7 years ago, I still think of her often and wish she could have been there with us on our
wedding day. She would have LOVED Mark.
Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you
made for your wedding? What made it so easy?
Our guest list!
We wanted to keep our wedding small and intimate. We kept it to family and our
closest friends. We’d highly recommend going this route! Obviously it was tough excluding some people
but everyone was very understanding and supportive of our decision to keep it small!
What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your wedding day?
And advice to couples on this?
Choosing the food! Emerald Lake Lodge has such a great menu, it was difficult to make a decision!
Obviously you want to make sure you’re appealing to all your guests tastes but make
sure you choose foods you both love!
Advice to couples planning their mountain wedding day?
Keep in mind that choosing a remote location (like ELL) will end up costing
substantially more for delivery and travel fees for vendors. (But totally worth it!)
