Calgary Makeup Artist Makeup by Erin Teolis weighs in on why having a professional makeup artist

on your wedding day is so important. Erin was one of my brides this summer so not only have I had the

pleasure to photograph tonnes of girls that she has done makeup on but I got to photograph her as

one heck of a beautiful bride(and with a pretty darn handsome groom too)

Why is Professional Wedding Day Makeup so Important?

People always question; “Why do I need a wedding day makeup artist? I have a friend who can do it, or I can do it myself!”.

Let me give you some reasons why…
I chose to do my own makeup on my wedding day, for many reasons.

A. Like most girls, I’m picky, and I know what I like, and how I want it to look. Working with amazing photographers,

I know what shows well on camera, and what I wanted to emphasize on camera.

B. I had all the products one would need to apply long lasting, quality makeup (primers, airbrush, lashes etc.)

Now, with this being said, if I didn’t have the skill or know what I was doing this would have been a total disaster!

Most people find photography to be one of the most important aspects of their day. It captures all the moments of one of the most enjoyable days of your life!

So don’t you want to look your best ALL day long in those photos? I used airbrush foundation on myself, and I kid you not, even my own sister said at 12:45am that night

“Your skin looks flawless, STILL!”. This was over 16 hours after it was applied that day. Nothing had smudged, moved etc.,

other than the occasional lipstick touch up which after lots of eating, drinking and kissing was inevitable! I’ve heard of girls say

“I’ll just go buy the makeup and do it myself to save money”….

A good foundation can run you upwards of $30.00+. A primer to make it last all day? $15.00-$30.00. Eyelashes – $10.00-$20.00.

Eye shadow pallet, $30.00+….so you can see why people think it’s “cheaper” to do it yourself, but makeup adds up very quickly when you buy quality makeup,

and you’ll probably end up spending just as much if not more on all that makeup you need vs. paying someone who is professionally trained to do it for you.

We all know weddings can add up, and everything seems to become quite overwhelming near the end money wise,

but professional hair & makeup can make the world of a difference on your wedding day. Make sure to do your research too, not every makeup

artist is a right fit for you or your style. I always tell brides to invest in a trial for their makeup prior to the wedding. This gives yourself a

better idea of how you want to look that day, and what you feel comfortable wearing as well. One thing I find for girls who don’t typically

wear makeup & check out their makeup for the first time after their trial they feel it might be “too much”, even on the most subtle of makeup applications.

First off, most brides come into my studio wearing sweat pants, casual clothes, and their hair thrown up in a messy bun off their face,

or still damp from their fresh shower that morning to ensure their face is freshly washed for their trial. Of course your makeup is

going too look a bit overwhelming compared to the rest of your attire!! The same goes for girl who have their hair trials and have an elaborate

updo, and then no makeup on with a hoodie; of course it’s going to feel weird. Everything comes together

perfectly with the hair, makeup, dress etc. on your big day, so keep that in mind when you are doing your trials as well.

Back to the note on photo ready makeup. As you can see in the photo I posted of myself on my wedding day,

it looks like I have a nice smoky eye. To achieve this, I had to apply quite a bit of shadow for this to look the way it did.

Professional photos wash you out quite a bit. Therefor, to achieve a noticeable smoky eye the application has to be much heavier.

The same goes for people who want a more natural look, there still needs to be definition there to be able to see the makeup,

even if it is a subtle look. I knew I wanted my eyes to pop, so I did a much darker eye on myself then some clients would like.

But for girls having your trials and wanting a nice smoky eye to show in photos, you need to do it bit darker than what you are used to!
