Michael & Deb’s Deane House Wedding

Red Bloom Photography

I just knew things were going to be a good fit with these two from the very beginning.

I opened my emails and read Deb’s email to me about her search for the perfect photographer. She said

they had contacted several photographers and just hadn’t found the right fit yet. And then she found

me and my style. She explained how she loved that my editing was right in the middle between light and

dark (which is my goal) and how she valued my experience and then she asked if we could meet to

discuss more and I was like heck yes we can. I met Deb alone for coffee and it was like instantly meeting a friend

I knew forever. We instantly clicked and as she told me about her and Michael and their day I just knew I had to

be a part of it.  Their day was about them and their relationships with the people they love and that

really showed the day of when they surrounded themselves with 16 of their closest friends

in their wedding party. It showed at their intimate tent reception when you heard people

laughing and saw people hugging and interacting everywhere you looked.  It meant alot to me

that they requested to spend less time on photos so they could make it back to their cocktail hour

to spend time with their guests. This was just one of those wedding days where I left with sore cheeks

from laughing and smiling so much.  I was a little sad that I had to leave without a donut from

their Tim Hortons donut bar cause those Tim donuts went to fast ha ha.

This day was just full of joy and love and I could go on and on about their day but lets hear from them.

How did you guys meet ?

Michael and I met on a “blind” date ( as blind as blind dates can be these days – I saw a photo of him

before we met and was instantly googly eyed. I thought he looked like Prince William, haha!). Michael’s brother and his

girlfriend (one of my friends) arranged for us to meet!

Please share the proposal story with us?

Michael and I have been spending our anniversary at the Rimrock in Banff ever since we met,

and he took me up there for our most recent anniversary last year, as per the tradition. He made

a reservation for a really nice dinner at The Eden, and told me to bring a dress and that he was

bringing a suit. I usually have to beg him to wear a suit outside of work, so with that, plus the

restaurant choice, I probably should have been tipped off, but fortunately I wasn’t! I almost even found

the ring in his suitcase that morning as I was thinking of cleaning it out for him and bringing it to Banff –

luckily I decided not to clean the front pockets out and just use it anyway. When he got home from work that

day and saw the suitcase at the front door, he thought for sure I had found it! He then moved the ring

when I wasn’t around into another bag which I strongly insisted he did not bring as we now looked

like we were packing for a week! Luckily I let it go, haha. When we finally got to Banff, I was in the

bathroom getting ready for dinner, and he told me he would get dressed outside the bathroom in the

room so that he could watch his favourite hockey team play (The Montreal Canadiens). I walked out

of the bathroom when I was dressed and saw the ring box open on the bed! I turned around in disbelief

and he was on one knee and asked me to marry him! I was totally surprised and of course,

the Canadiens scored! It was so magical and private and low key, and then we got to

celebrate with an amazing dinner. It was exactly what I wanted, just me and him.

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Bride: My most memorable moment was two fold : the first part was walking down the aisle to
see my husband, it was the first time I had cried all morning as everything felt so
busy! Beginning to step down that aisle, and seeing his face made everything seem just so happy
and right, and it was the calmest I had felt all day! The second part was  the way every time
Michael and I would walk back into the reception area, everyone would cheer so loudly  – not just
once, but every single time. It was that moment that I realized how much support, love and
excitement there was for us among our family and friends. Both of these moments just felt
so surreal, and are ones I will never forget!
Groom: Mine was also two fold! It was walking down the aisle myself first with my
parents, and then the moment where I stood at the front and got to see Deb for the first time.
Just seeing how many people showed up to support us was so emotional. Then, seeing how beautiful
my bride looked and watching her walk down that aisle to marry me just made me so happy.

It was the official “new” continuation of our relationship!

Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?

To be honest, the most important details to us were just having all of our friends and families
there. We tried really hard to just make it about enjoying each others time and celebrating casually,
so didn’t follow too many of the traditions like the bouquet toss, cutting of the cake or a garter toss.
We also had our bridal party’s significant others sit with us at the head table, as the whole
reception was set up around family style tables. We know that meant a lot to them and we think it
just made the night even more fun!! Another thing we did that was really important to us, was making
sure that after our first dance, we both danced with our own parents, but also our in laws.
Michael and his mom have a really important relationship, so we wanted him to have a dance
with her at the same time I had my father daughter dance. My mother raised me just as much as
my father did, and Michael’s dad is a now a second father in my life that I am so blessed to
have. It was really lovely. We loved veering away a bit from the some of the more common wedding

traditions – it made us feel like the day was uniquely ours!

Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you made for
your wedding? What made it so easy?
Having a Tim Hortons donut bar! We looked at many different options for a dessert bar,
but in the end I couldn’t help but laugh when Michael suggested we just go simple and have
Tim Hortons! It was so him and I loved the idea. A very Canadian experience for

some of our out of country guests!

What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your
wedding day? And advice to couples on this?
I could also answer this question twice! The first  choice would have to be choosing
reception venue! We knew we loved the Deane House, but really had a hard time justifying
fitting this into our budget. At the end of the day, we both compromised on certain aspects,
and had to get really creative to fit it into our budget, but it was so worth it. As I mentioned above,
it was where some of our most special memories of the day occured! I never could have
imagined that the food, the layout and beauty of the venue, and the team that worked
there would have played such a huge roll how amazing the day was for us- and I can
truly say that I look back at all of those aspects and more and just cannot stop smiling.
It truly was one of the best decisions we ever could have made!
The second choice would be choosing a photographer – we searched high and low and
did serious research. The market is full of photographers, and I was having a really hard
time finding the difference between many of them. When I found Monica however, I just
had a totally comforting feeling and felt she did such a great job separating herself
from the rest. I loved how her editing style (specifically related to lightness and
brightness versus a darker style) was actually right in the middle! It was natural looking
and professional and you could tell her work came from an experienced photographer.
Something about how timeless her style was just made me feel confident that in 20 years,
I would STILL love our photos! Her website was so professional and full of information, she
was quick to respond to our questions, and what really sold me was hearing how long she had
been photographing for. Hearing she had been doing this for over 7 years, and had “seen it all”, making
her prepared for both the best and the worst case scenarios (in terms of weather, wedding
day hiccups, etc.) gave us all the confidence we needed. So it was a long search for the
perfect photographer, but I am so grateful we chose Monica!
Advice to couples planning their wedding day?
I am sure everyone has heard this before, but you truly get one day to make it about
yourselves and your love, so just do whatever feels right and natural to you. It
can become so easy to feel torn and influenced to make the day about others, not wanting
to offend or hurt anyones feelings. However, you can still be kind and thoughtful to your
friends and family like organizing the day in a way that will give them ample time to rest and o
socialize how they choose, without sacrificing your own happiness! Just know that at the
end of the day, the people who love you will support whatever you choose, and if you stick to
what you truly want, you will not regret it!

The Deane House is nestled in the heart of the city and it is stunning! dean house wedding, calgary wedding photographersI always ask my couples if they have any photo requests and Deb asked if I could capture their details as she knew
they would be so busy enjoying their day and their friends and family that they would not have the time to
really take in the little details of the day.   Their day of coordinator Amanda from Calgary Wedding Planning Co
