Emerald Lake Lodge Winter Wedding – Mark & Kait’s Intimate Mountain Wedding

Emerald Lake Lodge Wedding

Mark & Kait’s Intimate Mountain Wedding

Red Bloom Photography

My first wedding of 2019 and it was one extra beautiful day!  A little stat for you all is that

February 2019 was the 3rd coldest February on record in over 125 years….but in saying that

the weather took a turn for the better for this day and we were lucky and had a nice breezy

-10c day in the midst of a month full of -20 to -30 days. Felt warm to me but I was also quite

bundled up. Mark & Kait had an intimate wedding at the gorgeous Emerald Lake Lodge. This was

my very first wedding of my own there but I have second shot quite a few for friends.

The property is so beautiful in winter and summer but this photographer is a big fan of

winter weddings and just how beautiful they are. This wedding day was a short one for me with

only five hours of work so it was just enough to cover Kait getting ready through to a few photos

at the cocktail hour. With everything so close we did not need much time for photos and only

spent about 45 minutes outside (with a few quick breaks for everyone as they were much

colder then I was). We walked across from Cilantros so a nice area of packed snow on the

frozen lake to get some beautiful shots there and then luckily people had created a nice path by the river and we

were able to get to it and shoot with the property in the background. I stepped off the path once and ended up

hip deep in snow. Luckily my husband was there with me working on his videography and he helped me

out of the snow! ha ha

Here are some words from Mark & Kait about how they met and their wedding day!

How did you guys meet ?

We met online in December 2013, we both knew on our first date that we had a connection.

When we met, I’d been living in Calgary for 6 months and still hadn’t been to the mountains!

When I told Mark that he said he’d like to take me sometime. And sure enough for our 2nd date he

planned a LOVELY day trip out to Lake Louise and Banff! We went on a sleigh ride at Lake Louise, a

soak in the hot springs and dinner at the Grizzly House in Banff!

Less than 2 months after that we took off on a trip to Thailand (flying standby,

to keep things interesting!) and the rest is history!

Please share the proposal story with us?

We both knew early on that we wanted to get married eventually. So Mark endured a

couple of years of not so subtle hints!

When we FINALLY popped the question, we were in Kelowna visiting his parents so it was really lovely

to be able to celebrate with them!

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Bride: I was really stressed out for the last 30 mins before the ceremony but as soon as I turned

the corner walking down the aisle and saw Mark, I felt instantly at ease. Until I realized he was not wearing

the agreed upon tie! Haha.

The ceremony was the part we were both least looking forward to and it

ended up being my favourite part of the day!! ️

Groom: Getting to kiss Kait at the end of the ceremony and walking down the

aisle together in front of all our friends and family. It was amazing to spend the weekend with

all of our favourite people.

Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?

Every time we drive out to the mountains and round that first corner that gives such

an amazing view, I’m reminded of the first time we made that drive together on our 2nd date.

That’s a big reason why we chose a winter wedding in the mountains!

We really wanted to keep the ceremony short and sweet and I think we were able

to accomplish that with our amazing officiant, Hans.

Something old: diamond studs Mark gave me for Christmas a couple of years ago.

Something new: my wedding dress, generously gifted to me by my parents.

Something borrowed: my sister Rebecca lent me her beautiful veil for the big day!

Something blue: the blue eryngium in my bouquet.

I also wore my Nanny’s mink jacket for some of the outdoor photos. She passed away

almost 7 years ago, I still think of her often and wish she could have been there with us on our

wedding day. She would have LOVED Mark.

Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you

made for your wedding? What made it so easy?

Our guest list!

We wanted to keep our wedding small and intimate. We kept it to family and our

closest friends. We’d highly recommend going this route! Obviously it was tough excluding some people

but everyone was very understanding and supportive of our decision to keep it small!

What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your wedding day?

And advice to couples on this?

Choosing the food! Emerald Lake Lodge has such a great menu, it was difficult to make a decision!

Obviously you want to make sure you’re appealing to all your guests tastes but make

sure you choose foods you both love!

Advice to couples planning their mountain wedding day?

Keep in mind that choosing a remote location (like ELL) will end up costing

substantially more for delivery and travel fees for vendors. (But totally worth it!)

Canmore Wedding Photographer | Craig & Carrie’s Cornerstone Wedding

Canmore Wedding Photographer

Craig & Carrie’s Cornerstone Wedding

Red Bloom Photography

I think any wedding photographer will tell you that every wedding has a hiccup.

Could be a big one like limo not showing up or makeup artist not showing up (these things have happened)

or small like someone got lost and is 15 minute late. Well every wedding but this one would be my answer!

I can not think of one hiccup that affect me anyway on this gorgeous day. From the moment I arrived this

was the most laid back day full of love and laughter.  It was October 19th but the weather was warmer

then most of my September weddings. It was stunning out like the men were sweating in their suits!

These two and their little man Griffin were just the most adorable three some to photograph. Griffin

loves to help so all morning while Craig was getting ready Griffin would help him and it made for the

most adorable moments!

After their romantic indoor ceremony at Cornerstone (hint hint: if you are getting married there

please have your ceremony on the floor like these two. It is better lighting, better angle and

not as hot under the warm stage lights on the stage), we went two two locations in Canmore for

their photos. They had a nice big time allocated to photos so we did not have to rush and they

could enjoy some drinks and then we even finished early and they went off to a pub for drinks

and I head to Cornerstone to capture some detail shots. I did go to the pub first for a few images

and then gave them some alone time. Often when couples offer advice to other couples they will

say to take a bit of time for you on the day and these two and their wedding party did.

Their speeches were full of laughs…like roaring make you cry belly laughs and a few tears for a

loved one who couldn’t attend the day due to illness. These two and their laid back loving

personalities made this day just breezy and fun!

Here are a few words from the newlyweds!

How did you guys meet?
We met at Hudson’s in south Calgary. We both have a love for hockey and we were both
there with friends watching the Flames vs Canucks game. Little did we know that that
night, a mutual friend would introduce us and 2 days later we would go on our first (of
many) dates to a Flames game.

Please share the proposal story with us?
We got engaged at a place called Green Gardens in Gros Morne National Park,
Newfoundland.
Picture This: Throwing on a backpack with a tent and all the things you need for a
couple overnight stays in the back country. Hiking through the mist, up the rocky
mountain, through the forest and eventually coming out into a clearing where your
backdrop is a massive green field, 50 ft cliffs and the ocean for as far as you can see! It
was the most amazing place to saying yes and committing to a lifetime with each other.
After a night of what felt like an insane monsoon (Carrie thought we were going to end
up in the ocean, swept away), we woke up to wild sheep baaaaahing out our tent door!
It was such a beautiful morning, the fog was rolling through, the air was calm our son, 4
months at the time, was with us and loving the fresh air. We cooked breakfast, packed
everything up and wanted to get a few more photos before we made our way out. I had
Griffin strapped to me and Craig ask us to go stand by the edge of the cliff to get that
‘perfect’ photo… Little did I know he was setting up the GoPro to take a video of the
special moment. He told me to turn around and when I did, he was down on one knee. It
was the most amazing backdrop for the perfect proposal!

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Bride: The most amazing thing for me on the wedding day was being in a room with
EVERYONE that is most important to us in our lives. It’s not often that our entire family
gets to spend a day/night together and it truly was amazing.
The most memorable moment during the day was right when we got to our first photo
location and Craig, Griffin and I were waiting to get pictures taken and we got to take a
breath with each other and just take in the moment. The day goes by SO fast so to just
take a minute and breath was great!
Groom: I’ll ditto Carrie’s comments on having EVERYONE in the mountains together
was fantastic. But the part of the day that i’ll never forget was the moments leading up
to the doors opening and the future Mrs. O’Reilly entering the room. With our son in my
arms the minute I heard the music start there was a rush of emotion that filled my body.
Within seconds the doors opening……… and in walked the most beautiful woman I’ve
ever laid my eyes on. I literally blacked out for a few seconds starring at her walking
towards me. Holding my gorgeous brides hands that day and saying “I DO” will forever
be the best moment of the day.

Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you
made for your wedding? What made it so easy?
Choosing Cornerstone Theatre as our place to get married. It is such a beautiful venue
with amazing food and amazing staff. The fact that they pretty much did everything for
us was a selling point. We had a wedding day coordinator which was there until closing
time, décor that was already there for us to use and just knowing that we didn’t need to
stress about anything (especially the small things) was totally worth it for us!

What was the most difficult, time-consuming choice that you made for your
wedding day? And advice to couples on this?
I’m not sure we really had any difficult choices. We had a few things that we weren’t
both on the same page on and one of us just made the decision and everything turned
out to be so great!!! For example, the guys suits and ties, we both had different visions
but because it was Craig’s department I just let him take the reins and do what he had
envisioned and it turned out to be amazing! I know that most weddings in the planning
stage, the female usually does the majority but if the guy wants to be 100% involved
then let them do their thing!

Advice to couples planning their wedding day?
Advice for those planning: Don’t sweat the small stuff! At the end of the day, if
something doesn’t get done or something gets missed YOU are the only one who will
know!!!

Calgary Wedding Photographer | Scott & Kristi’s Sirocco Golf Wedding

Calgary Wedding Photographer

Scott & Kristi’s Sirocco Golf Wedding

Red Bloom Photography

Every time i blog a wedding I get this flood of emotions as I go through the images from the day.

The storytelling part of the day is what I love about wedding photography. I love all the little details

and moments that come together to tell the story.  I want my couples to look back at their images

and feel like they can kinda relive the day through them. When I go through Scott & Kristi’s

wedding I really do feel like there is so many mini moments that really show how connected

these two are to each other and to their friends and family.  There was so many laughs and tears

and some killer dance moves!  And….some pretty epic sunset light. The sun literally kissed their

skin into these golden tones.  It was a photographers dream. Also, I have no complaints about

getting to rip around in a golf cart all day…wait did I say rip…I mean drive slowly and

responsibly ha ha.

One thing you might notice about this wedding is that the order of the photos may

seem a bit mixed up but they sure aren’t. When my couples want to have a short turn around between ceremony

and their reception but they do not want a first look we do a special timeline. So what we do is we do photos

before the ceremony of the bride with her bridesmaids and the groom with his groomsmen. But we do it in a way

so that the bride and groom do not see each other. This allows my couple to still get all those amazing

wedding party photos without having a 3 hour break between ceremony and the reception. So for

Scott and Kristi we did this and then after the ceremony we just did about 10 minutes of wedding party

images and then we did photos of the two of them. And then I of course took them out at sunset again.

Before I get to their wedding story I have some words from the newlyweds…

How did you guys meet?

We met on a University Ski Trip 8 years ago, but our love story didn’t begin there! Scott immediately

caught Kristi’s eye, and that’s how he got the nickname, “Ski Trip Scott.” It took us two

years of random encounters and the occasional coffee dates to figure out

that we were perfect for each other!

Please share the proposal story with us?

We had a trip planned to the Dominican Republic with friends in the spring of 2017. Scott

successfully snuck the ring on the trip without Kristi finding it, and as the sun set on

the beach, Scott popped the question!

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Bride – The entire day was memorable! Everything from start to finish was amazing.

It was truly one of the best days of my life!

Groom – It’s hard to pick just one moment, but the one that stands out the most was standing

up in front of all of my friends and family, and seeing how beautiful Kristi looked in her

wedding dress, walking down the aisle towards the rest of our lives together!

Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?

Kristi: My “something borrowed” was the veil that one of my best friends

(and bridesmaid) wore at her wedding last year. Next year another one of our best friend

s (and another one of my bridesmaids) is getting married, and she is going to wear the veil too!

We are calling it “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Veil.”

My “something old” was some lace from Scott’s grandma’s wedding dress

that she wore at her wedding 56 years ago.

Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest

decision you made for your wedding? What made it so easy?

The venue- Sirocco Golf Club! With Scott being from Lethbridge and Kristi being from

Calgary, we wanted to find venue with a mix of country and city. We knew the moment we

saw the rolling hills and wheat fields for an outdoor ceremony, and the beautiful

interior of the clubhouse, that we had found the perfect place!

What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your

wedding day? And advice to couples on this?

Our most challenging decision was making our guest list. With a restriction on the

number of guests, it was extremely hard to decide who to invite, and who not to. In the end, we

followed our guts and invited our closest family and friends. We would advise other couples to do the

same- after all, it’s those closest to you that make the day so special.

Advice to couples planning their wedding day?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help! We discovered that everyone we asked was more than

happy to help, which alleviated our stress and gave us the gift of time.

Dolan & Cassie’s Willow Lane Barn Wedding

Red Bloom Photography

I am gearing up for my 2019 wedding season and I realized that I had not yet blogged

this beautiful Willow Lane Barn wedding from last September. Willow Lane Barn has been on my venues

bucket list for quite a few years now so I was so pumped to finally get to capture a wedding there.

It is a rustic wedding venue of my dreams and just a short drive from Calgary.

Dolan & Cassie’s wedding was just one of those days that was full of laughter and love.  From the moment the

day started Cassie was laughing with her girls and telling them all how beautiful they looked.

Their ceremony was short and sweet saying I do inside of the barn rather then outside in the gardens.

They opted to have these doors open but this makes it quite tricky for light so If you are planning your wedding

there I would recommend keeping the doors closed and have the beautiful wood as your backdrop.

After their ceremony we did all their photos on the property and I even snuck them out at sunset for some epic

golden hour photos.

Here are some words from the Bride & Groom

How did you guys meet ?
– I would like to tell you some elaborate romantic story of how we met in Italy sharing a single

strand of spaghetti but that would be a lie! Dolan & I met the new age way .. online!

– I was new to the city and didn’t know a lot of people, and the night life wasn’t for me so online

dating seemed to be my best option.

– For Dolan he worked 7 days a week, and would much rather unwind in front of his computer

after a long day!

-We met for the first time at a mall parking lot where he surprised me with my favourite flowers, which at

the time he didn’t even know they were! We walked around and chatted and ended spending

the whole day together getting to know each other!

Please share the proposal story with us?

– It was October.13, my favourite time of year .. fall! Nothing more romantic than layered

cozy clothes, fall evenings with the brisk air & a corn maze! One of my childhood friends asked

what we wanted to do while in Calgary so I said “oh I found this super cute corn maze/ pumpkin patch that

we should go to” little did I know she was getting me to basically plan out my own engagement!

So the 4 of us met there and went around the maze and as we were getting ready to leave

there was this huge rocking chair and Dolan said let’s get a photo together, I was totally

game and as I was climbing on the chair and I turned around he was on one knee!

Most memorable moment from your wedding day?

Bride: Honestly for me it was walking down the stairs to Dolan and seeing him

standing at the alter, as a little girl all you dream about is your wedding day and for me it was

all about the man waiting for me at the end of the isle, i without a doubt had no hesitations and

couldn’t wait to get there to him!

Groom: “Cassie walking down the stairs, and seeing her for the first time in her dress”

Tell me about the special aspects of your day that made it unique to you two?

– I think what made our wedding so special is Dolan grew up on a farm his

whole life so getting married in a barn just seemed so fitting! As well Dolans dad was very ill

and we weren’t sure if he would be able to make to the wedding, and he ended up being there which was pretty special!

– For my something borrowed, my sister had gotten married a year before me

and her mother in law made her a clothes pin with something blue on it, a dime and a locket with

our late grandfathers photo in it, which held so much importance to my sister and I! The reason there was

a dime was because since he has passed in the 10 years it all me my mom and sister find is

dime laying around everywhere! So when she came up to see me in my

dress she clipped it onto my bouquet.

Can you tell me more about the Newfie Screeching in tradition?

 – This was a complete surprise, I knew that they were going to be screeching

in my sister in law and Dolan but my sister and I had no clue we would be involved as well!

Basically what happens is if you are not born on the Rock then you can become an

honorary Newfie by participating in a screeching. It is a very serious affair and not optional.

– There are a few different ways of doing it but basically you have to take

a shot of Newfie screech, kiss a cod fish on the lips, do the Newfie jig, and recite

“Indeed we do me old cock and long may your big jib draw”

– Which means: Indeed we do means indeed we do, Me old cock is an old English cockney

term meaning dear friend And long may your big jib draw is a mariners term meaning may

you always have favourable winds and a safe voyage.

– Then you get a certificate saying you are now a Newfie !

Besides making the choice to marry each other, what was the easiest decision you made for

your wedding? What made it so easy?

Honestly everything was quite simple, the best advice that I could give a newly engaged

couple is pick one option and go with it don’t exhaust all your options because that’s when it starts

getting stressful! I had one location in mind, one photographer (you of course), one style of

bridesmaid dress, etc! I’m not a very indecisive person, I knew what I liked and I just went with it 🙂

What was the most difficult, time consuming choice that you made for your

wedding day? And advice to couples on this?

The most time consuming believe it or not was the men’s suits! Because it was so restrictive,

you don’t have a lot of options unless you do everyone custom which isn’t practical!

This was difficult because I only had one option in mind so when it came down to it we had to make some

changes to make it work with what they had for rentals! But the best advice for situations like this is to

breathe and remember why your there, your planning one of the happiest days of your life for

you and the person you love! Enjoy it and don’t sweat the small stuff!

Advice to couples planning their wedding day?

My advice would be what I said above, don’t have to many options limit yourself

to 2 options for a everything, don’t over think it and just really enjoy it! I found that it all went so

fast and I can truly say that I loved the planning process it wasn’t until the week before that I found myself stressing.

Also make sure to include your hubby to be even if it’s in the smallest way, my husband

didn’t really want a huge say but when he did have an opinion I made sure that w

incorporated in no matter how wild or crazy the idea was!

And now here is Dolan & Cassie’s Wedding Story

willow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingCassie did a first look with her sister and her dad! Her sister was so emotional. It was so sweet!

And then they took a family selfie! ha hawillow_lane_barn_weddingCassie is an interior designer and her amazing style showed in the details! Everything was so perfect. willow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingIf there is an opportunity to take sunset photos at your reception then say yes…always say yes !! willow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_weddingwillow_lane_barn_wedding
