I feel like I can constantly write about how amazing my couples are and how lucky
I am to be part of their day. I often feel like I need to be pinched when I am at work
shooting a wedding and Im like how is this my job it is amazing! I haven’t always been a photographer
and I haven’t always wanted to be one. The thought never crossed my mind until it did and when
it did it was like an epiphany, I was like this is it, this is what I want to do. I actually went
to University for 6 years and have two degrees but that career that I trained for never felt
like the right fit for me so after a brief time in it I took a break and during that break I
planned my own wedding and that is how I feel in love with wedding photography and I haven’t
looked back since and wondered what if. The longer I do photography and the more that I build
my company and my style the more that I feel my couples really connect to it. When I started and
my work was inconsistent and I was inexperienced I had couples sending pinterest lists like
5 pages long. Not anymore, it is quite the opposite they say we trust you and love your style.
And that is exactly how you should feel when you hire your wedding photographer. Brandon &
Jacqueline were like this and they were so laid back and trusting and it made capturing their
wedding so easy. Well it wasn’t without hiccups on my end(you will read about those below).
I first met Brandon on the wedding day cause we didn’t do an engagement session and he was welcoming
and had everything ready at their house for groom prep. He read my tips that I sent for morning of
and it made it super easy for me to capture him and the boys that morning. And Jacqueline and her
bridemaids were the same, all prepared, ready for photos. Just so easy and laid back. It was just
perfect….except those hiccups. So first of all I got locked out of the parking garage downtown where my
car was but after a phone call I got let back in and then the elevator at the Palliser just didn’t come. I waited
about ten minutes and with a giant suitcase of equipment walking up to the 11th floor was not an option.
Even though I had these little things happen, everything went so perfect in the morning. And it is because
both the bride & the groom were so organized and had read my prep tips for the day.
And the biggest hiccup…It took me 35 minutes to drive 11 blocks downtown due to road construction.
Calgary roads are no joke in the summer, anyone else feel like they do all the road construction in
one month ha ha. Geez. So honestly, I was late for the ceremony…the first time in over 125 wedding.
But I always have emergency contacts for day of so I phoned the best man, let me know and they
of course waited for me. I was only 5 minutes late so it wasn’t that bad and these things can happen, I am
so lucky that this is a first for me and I am happy that i was prepared with numbers to call.
After that the whole day went so smoothly that I could not have asked for a better couple or a better
day. We did their photos at Reader Rock Garden which is where the ceremony was and then we travelled
to Sundance Lake Residents Association for the reception and this is actually the third wedding
that I have shot there so I am quite familiar with it. I think the highlight of my day was taking them
out for sunset photos and getting the most unreal light ever! Oh just obsessed with the light.
Okay enough talking and now time for the photos!
Here is Brandon & Jacqueline’s Wedding Story…
This is exactly what I am talking about when I said Brandon was prepared for me. He had the room with the most light cleaned and organized and even
had everyones suits drapped over the chairs. I just love this idea for gifts. Brandon got each of his guys a personalized watch an a imported beer to match their personality/relationship. So thoughtful
and unique and the guys loved it. And the most beautiful bridal prep suite at Hotel Palliser. Dream location and I love that they had the perfect spot to hang all the dresses. Love this lighting on Jacqueline as Makeup by Erin Kilburn dolled her up. KK no joke, this moment is not posed. It started as three of them and then they all jumped in and started to take photos. Super sweet bridemaids gifts with cute glasses and treats. This suit is seriously perfect for prep. I think some people underestimate how important a good prep space is. This room is well lit, it has lots of room and is
just absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite ceremony locations in the city, Reader Rock Garden. His face when he sees her is just perfect. Just as they are about to be announced and he can kiss her bride. Her smile says it all. Brandon made this table himself and not only did they use it as a signing table but they used it as their guestbook as well. So uniqueAll these gorgeous girls had their makeup done by Makeup by Erin Kilburn who is one of my favs! I just love embracing the sun when it is summer. We photographers love clouds but we don’t always get them and I personally love this light on them . They really loved this building at Reader Rock Garden so we tried to incorporate it as much as possible in their photos. This dessert table was so yum…I might have taken a few things home with me for the drive ha ha. Dear all brides & grooms take 15-30 minutes at sunset for photos cause you can get the most amazing light and it is nice to have a little breather away from receptionkk I should say, this light is exceptional and won’t always happen. I was actually like freaking out over how beautiful it was. I always love first dances and I find myself kinda swaying along with them as they dance.
